Green bean casserole is THE traditional Thanksgiving side dish - It's the side that everyone is looking forward to digging into and would surely be missed if it wasn’t present. This classic casserole is made with a creamy mushroom sauce, green beans, cheddar cheese, and topped with crispy fried onions!
In a large bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, garlic powder, salt, and cheese. Mix until well combined.
Add ¾ cup of crispy fried onions and green beans to the mixture. Mix until well combined and transfer to a 9 x 9 baking dish.
Bake uncovered for 25 minutes or until bubbling.
Remove from oven and stir green bean mixture. Top with remaining crispy fried onions. Return to oven and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes.
Serve while hot and enjoy!
If you're using fresh or frozen green beans, make sure they're cooked first! Fresh green beans should be blanched until tender and frozen green beans should be steamed according to package directions.
If you want a more mushroom flavor into your casserole, sauté button mushrooms and add it to your casserole.
Using fresh onions and frying them yourself gives your casserole a more crispy texture. Soak your onions in buttermilk and then coat with crispy crumbs, herbs, and flour. Lastly, deep-fry your onions to a golden brown crisp.
