  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp. milk
  • 1 Tbsp red gel food coloring

Sugar For Rolling

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar


  • In a medium size mixing bowl whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl beat softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until combined.
  • Add eggs, vanilla, lemon juice, milk, and food coloring and continue beating until batter is smooth and creamy.
  • Slowly add in flour and mix until just combined.
  • Cover and refrigerate dough for at least 30 minutes.
  • Once dough has had a chance to chill, preheat oven to 350F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Place 1/2 cup granulated sugar and powdered sugar into separate bowls.
  • Scoop 1 1/2-2 tablespoons cookie dough and roll into balls.
  • Roll cookie dough into granulated sugar, and then roll in powdered sugar until completely covered.
  • Place on prepared baking sheet and bake in preheated oven for 13 minutes until cookies are puffed and cracked.
  • Let cookies cool completely and store in an airtight container. Enjoy!
