Philly cheesesteak sandwiches are one of my favorite things in the world to eat. If you have been around our blog for a while. You may have noticed I have tried to turn a lot of classic recipes into some form of a Philly cheesesteak recipe. Some of our most popular ones are Easy Philly Cheesesteak Sliders and Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes. I also love using my Instant Pot and pasta. So it was bound to happen that I made a Philly cheeseteak pasta in an Instant Pot.

Ingredients For Instant Pot Philly Cheesesteak Pasta

When creating this recipe I tried to use ingredients that I would have on hand. I wanted it to be an easy dinner recipe that you just add everything to your pressure cooker and not have to go to the store and find special ingredients.

  • Ground Beef: I like to use 85% lean ground beef. anything between 80 – 90% lean is perfect for this recipe.
  • Pasta: I personally like to use rigatoni pasta. But any small dried pasta will work great.
  • Butter: Helps saute the green peppers, garlic, and onions. Can be substituted for olive oil.
  • Onion: The subtle flavor of a yellow onion works best. But, you can substitute with any variety of white or yellow onion.
  • Bell Pepper: I prefer to use green peppers. But, you can use any variety that you like.
  • Garlic: I like to use fresh minced or Minced Garlic in a jar. It adds so much more flavor than powdered garlic.
  • Salt & Pepper: You can adjust to your liking.
  • Ketchup: Adds the perfect amount of sweetness and tang to the pasta.
  • Chili Powder: Adds a subtle kick to the pasta.
  • Beef Broth: Adds so much flavor to the pasta. In a pinch, you can omit the beef broth and just use water or chicken broth.
  • Cheese: I like to you mozzarella cheese because I usually have it on hand. But, any white cheese like provolone, mozzarella, or swiss works great.

Tools Needed

How To Make Instant Pot Philly Cheesesteak Pasta

  • Turn the Instant Pot to saute, add butter, and melt. Add garlic and saute for 30 seconds.
  • Add diced onions and green peppers and cook 1-2 minutes to soften veggies.
  • Then, add ground beef, cook until completely browned. About 3-4 minutes. With a spoon remove any excess grease
  • Turn Instant Pot off and add black pepper, salt, ketchup, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth. Stir until well combined.
  • Pour in rigatoni pasta and stir into the ground beef mixture.
  • Put the lid on Instant Pot and set the valve to sealing. Select pressure cook high, high pressure. Set a time to cook for 3 minutes. This will cook the pasta to a perfect al dente. If you like a softer pasta add 1 minute to the cooking time.
  • When pasta is done cooking. Turn off the Instant Pot and open the valve to release pressure. Remove the lid and gradually stir in mozzarella cheese. Make sure to mix all ingredients well.
  • Serve immediately and garnish with fresh chopped parsley. Enjoy!

How To Change It Up

  • Mushrooms: Add a cup of sliced brown or cremini mushrooms when you add the onions and peppers.
  • Protein: If you are not a fan of ground beef. You can substitute it with ground turkey, pork, or chicken. You can also use thinly sliced steak to make it more authentic.
  • The Cheese: The recipe calls for white cheese. But, if you want to make it like the original Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Omit the mozzarella cheese and replace it with cheez wiz.
  • Make It Cheesier: If your family loves things cheesy. Double the amount of mozzarella cheese.

Tips For The Best Philly Cheesesteak Pasta

  • Use Beef Broth: It adds so much flavor and is one of the reasons this pasta recipe is so good.
  • Don’t Over Cook It: Saute the ground beef just enough to brown it to a medium or medium-rare. The ground beef will continue to cook in the pressure cooker with the pasta. Cook the noodles to the stated time. Nobody likes a soggy noodle.
  • Don’t Use Egg Noodles: Egg noodles cook a lot faster than dried pasta. So I highly recommend not using them.

What Is The Best Pasta To Use?

Personally, I like to use rigatoni for their size and shape. But, you can use any small pasta like rigatoni, shells, elbow, and macaroni. These all work well in the pressure cooker recipe for the amount of liquid and cook time. The only pasta that I do not recommend is spaghetti or long noodles. This will completely change the texture and flavor of the recipe.

Should I Let This Naturally Release?

No, this recipe uses the quick release method when it is done cooking. If you allow your Instant Pot to naturally release the pasta will become soft and mushy.

Pro Tip: When using the quick release method a lot of steam will come out of the valve. To avoid being burned, place a towel over the vent and then turn it to release. This will help any chance of the steam burning your hands or face.

How To Store

Let the pasta cool to room temperature, then place it in an air-tight container. The leftovers will stay good in the fridge for 3-4 days. When you are ready to eat your leftovers. Reheat them in the microwave or on the stove top. If you are reheating them on the stove top. Add 1-2 tablespoons of water to keep the pasta from drying out.
