Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes are the perfect meal when you are craving a cheese steak. But only have ground beef in the fridge. It has the same cheesy goodness and amazing flavors with onion, mushroom, green pepper and spices, but at a fraction of the price of sliced Rib Eye steak.

My kids absolutely love Sloppy Joes for dinner. So I am always looking for meals that are similar. One night at dinner one of my kids asked if they could add cheese to their sloppy Joe. Then it hit me that I could tweak my recipe a bit and turn into a Philly cheese steak. After a few tries I came up with the perfect Philly sandwich made from ground beef.

Some of my favorite sides to serve with these is my Potato Salad or Macaroni Salad. If I don’t have time to make these I will typically air fry up some sweet potato fries.

Ground Beef Philly Cheese Steak Ingredients

  • Ground Beef – I like to use 85% lean ground beef. So that there are some drippings left in the pan to saute the vegetables.
  • Unsalted Butter – salted butter can be used too, just leave out a 1/4 tsp salt from the recipe.
  • Yellow Onion – Yellow onions are a bit sweeter, but can be substituted with white onions.
  • Green Pepper – Adds a slight bite to the cheese steak.
  • Brown Mushrooms – Also known as Crimini mushrooms can be substituted with white or Shiitake mushrooms.
  • Garlic – for stronger flavor add 5 cloves minced.
  • Ketchup – can be substituted with tomato paste.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – Adds a wonderful deep flavor.
  • Salt – I don’t use much because there is already some in the beef broth.
  • Ground Black Pepper – You can add more or less depending on how much you normally like.
  • Cornstarch – This is used to thicken up the sauce. If you don’t have cornstarch you can substitute all-purpose flour.
  • Beef Broth – This adds so much more flavor then just water.
  • Provolone Cheese – Can be substituted with Swiss cheese.
  • Hamburger Buns – Use a heavier bun like a potato or brioche bun. The juices will make a regular hamburger bun fall apart.

How To Make Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add ground beef and cook until it reaches a deep brown color. While cooking break apart ground beef and stir occasionally. Then remove skillet from stove top.
  • Remove the ground beef from the skillet leaving rendered fat. Then over medium high heat melt butter and add minced garlic, diced onions, diced green peppers, and diced mushrooms. Saute for 3-4 minutes until they have softened.
  • Then add Beef Back into the skillet.
  • In a small bowl whisk the beef broth an cornstarch together to make a roux.
  • Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, chili powder, beef broth/cornstarch roux into the skillet. Mix to combine well.
  • Cook and stir meat mixture until thickened. 3-5 minutes.
  • Take pan off of the heat, add the chopped provolone cheese and stir. Cover and let sit for a couple of minutes until cheese is melted. Then serve on on a toasted Brioche bun and enjoy!

Recipe Tips and Tricks

You can substitute the ground beef with a thinly sliced ribeye steak or a quality top sirloin. If you decide to replace the ground beef. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to the pan when browning the steak. This will keep it from sticking to the pan.

Replace the bun with a hoagie roll. This will turn it into more of a traditional cheese steak sandwich.

Can This Be Made In A Instant Pot?

Absolutely, these sloppy Joe’s are perfect for the Instant pot. Start by setting the Instant Pot to saute mode. Brown the ground beef. Then add in all of the other ingredients except the Provolone cheese.

Then, place the lid on your Instant Pot and lock it into place. Turn pressure release valve to sealing, then select pressure cook, high pressure. Cook for 5 minutes. It will take about 10 minutes for the pressure to build up. Before the cooking timer starts to count down. When timer runs out turn release valve to release. Wait for safety valve to drop before removing lid.

Remove the lid and add Provolone cheese on top. Place the lid back on and let sit for 2-3 minutes. Then remove the lid and stir in melted cheese.

Can This Be Made In A Crock Pot?

Yes, on days that I know I am going to be busy running the kids around. I love to throw this in the Crock Pot. Start by brown in the ground beef and add it to the Crock Pot. Then add in all of the ingredients except the Provolone cheese and reduce the beef broth down to half a cup.

Cook on low for 4 hours. If after 4 hours the sauce is not thick add in 1 more tablespoon of cornstarch. Then cook for an additional 30 minutes. Once the sauce has reached the desired thickness. Add in the provolone cheese and put the lid back on for 2-3 minutes. Then remove the lid and stir in melted cheese.
