Strawberry season has finally arrived and what better dessert to make than a strawberry shortcake. I love the patriotic twist on this classic strawberry dessert, and it is so much fun for kiddos to help make. This is such an easy recipe to prepare and enjoy anytime during the Summer, but especially in July. Ingredients needed for patriotic strawberry shortcake
- Pound Cake: I love the rich buttery flavor of pound cake, but you can also use angel food cake if you prefer.
- Strawberries: Wash, rinse, and dry strawberries before slicing.
- Sugar: Add more or less. After sprinkling sugar over strawberries let them sit in the fridge for at least an hour, so they become nice and juicy.
- Cool Whip: Cool Whip or fresh whipped cream are both great options.
- Food Coloring: Adding blue food coloring to the cool whip will take this patriotic shortcake to the next level.
How to make patriotic strawberry shortcake
- In a medium size mixing bowl combine sliced strawberries and sugar until well combined. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least an hour. This allows the strawberries to macerate and become juicy.
- Add food coloring to cool whip and stir to combine well. Keep in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
- Once strawberries have had a chance to get nice and juicy, add cubed pound cake or angel food cake to a Individual serving dishes.
- Add a heaping spoonful of strawberries and top with cool whip.
- Serve immediately, Enjoy!
Can I use frozen strawberries
Frozen strawberries can be used in this recipe, but keep in mind the flavor and texture won’t be quite the same. If using frozen strawberries, thaw them completely before adding sugar.
How to store strawberry shortcake
Strawberry shortcake is best when served between 4-24 hours. Store ingredients separately to prevent the pound cake from getting soggy.
