Ingredients needed for patriotic strawberry shortcake

  • Pound Cake: I love the rich buttery flavor of pound cake, but you can also use angel food cake if you prefer.
  • Strawberries: Wash, rinse, and dry strawberries before slicing.
  • Sugar: Add more or less. After sprinkling sugar over strawberries let them sit in the fridge for at least an hour, so they become nice and juicy.
  • Cool Whip: Cool Whip or fresh whipped cream are both great options.
  • Food Coloring: Adding blue food coloring to the cool whip will take this patriotic shortcake to the next level.

Can I use frozen strawberries

Frozen strawberries can be used in this recipe, but keep in mind the flavor and texture won’t be quite the same. If using frozen strawberries, thaw them completely before adding sugar.

How to store strawberry shortcake

Strawberry shortcake is best when served between 4-24 hours. Store ingredients separately to prevent the pound cake from getting soggy.
