Ingredients for chocolate mug cake
- Flour: All-purpose flour is used in this recipe. Be sure to level off your tablespoons to keep your cake from getting too dense.
- Brown Sugar: You can substitute brown sugar with white granulated sugar.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: Be sure to use unsweetened cocoa powder and NOT Dutch cocoa powder.
- Baking Powder: Baking powder is a leavening agent and will help your cake to rise.
- Salt: This recipe calls for very little salt. You only want to use a pinch.
- Milk: I used 1% milk, but you can use any kind of milk that you prefer.
- Oil: Vegetable oil or olive oil can be used in this recipe.
- Vanilla: I like to use pure vanilla when baking, but vanilla extract works also works well.
- Chocolate Chips: Milk chocolate chips are my favorite, but you can use any chocolate chips that you have on hand.
How to make the best chocolate mug cake
- Spray the bottom of a microwave save mug with cooking spray.
- Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt to your mug. Stir until all dry ingredients are combined well.
- Add milk, oil, and vanilla, and stir until smooth. Be sure to scrape the bottom of the mug.
- Sprinkle chocolate chips on top, or stir them into the cake batter.
- Cook in the microwave for 70-90 seconds, or until cake is just set. Because all microwaves are different, it’s difficult to give an exact cook time. Start with 70 seconds and look to see if it is set. Add another 10 seconds if it needs to cook longer.
- Remove from microwave and allow to cool for one minute before serving. Serve as is or top it with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
Substitutions for a healthier mug cake
- Substitute brown sugar with an artificial sweetener or honey, or cut the amount in half.
- Use white whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour.
- Use applesauce or coconut oil instead of vegetable oil.
- Omit the chocolate chips.
