Homemade Granola

This Easy Homemade Granola recipe is one of my favorite breakfast recipes. I like that I can make a big batch of homemade granola, and have it for breakfast or a quick snack throughout the week. Besides eating this granola by the handfuls, we love adding it to yogurt, or we eat it like a bowl of cereal with milk poured over top. This granola recipe is a far more heathier granola option, and you canโ€™t beat freshly baked granola packed with delicious and good for you ingredients. Homemade Granola Ingredients

  • Rolled Oats: Old fashioned rolled oats work the best for this recipe. Use gluten free is you prefer.
  • Chopped Nuts: I like chopped almonds in my granola, you can also use walnuts or pecans. *If you can’t have nuts, omit them and add another cup of rolled oats*
  • Cinnamon: Gives a nice hint of cinnamon to the granola, which I love.
  • Brown Sugar: A small amount of brown sugar adds a little sweetness to the granola.
  • Coconut Oil: I prefer coconut oil, which is delicious (you can barely taste the coconut) and produces the perfect texture. You can use extra-virgin olive oil instead, if you’d like your granola to be a little more on the savory side.
  • Honey: Honey will bind the granola together to form clusters. If you are looking for a vegan option, use maple syrup instead. Granola made with maple syrup will crumble a bit more, but will still have the same great flavor.
  • Vanilla: Pure vanilla or vanilla extract both work well. I also like the flavor of almond extract in this granola.

How to make homemade granola

  • Preheat oven to 300 F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a medium size mixing bowl combine old fashioned oats, chopped almonds (if you can’t have nuts, omit them and add another cup of rolled oats), cinnamon, and brown sugar. Stir to combine ingredients well.
  • In a small mixing bowl stir together melted coconut oil, honey, and vanilla until combined.
  • Pour coconut oil mixture over oats, and stir until all ingredients are mixed well.
  • Spread mixture evenly onto prepared baking sheet, and place in the oven for 25 minutes until lightly browned.
  • Remove from oven and cool completely. Granola will become crunchy as it cools. Transfer to an air tight container for storing, Enjoy!

Tips for the perfects granola

  • Stick with a low temperature and keep an eye on your granola while baking, and stir from time to time. Cooking at a high temperature can cause ingredients in the granola like nuts, seeds, and coconut to burn.
  • Line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • All ovens are different, so make sure to keep an eye on your granola towards the end of the baking time.
  • Keep in mind that the granola will not become crunchy while in the oven. It will set and harden as it cools.
  • Use old fashioned rolled oats, quick cooking oats won’t retains their texture while cooking.

Optional granola mix ins

  • Dried Fruit: Dried fruit adds some extra sweetness, chewy texture and delicious fruity flavor. I love to add dried cranberries, tart dried cherries, raisins and chopped dried apricots.
  • Citrus: For a fresh citrus flavor, stir fresh citrus zest (up to 2 teaspoons) into the mixture before baking. I love adding orange zest, in particular.
  • Coconut: If youโ€™d like to add unsweetened coconut flakes, you can add it halfway through baking for perfectly toasted results.

How to store granola

Store the granola in an airtight container or zip lock bag at room temperature for up to one month, or in a sealed freezer bag in the freezer for up to 3 months. If you are adding dried fruit, the fruit can freeze solid, so let it warm to room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

This recipe is really amazing. I can prepare this with Baked Granola with Honey & Almonds from True Elements- a clean label food brand which I have been using for a year and it really is great! One doubt whether we can use this recipe for all age groups? Please let me know. Can’t wait to try this recipe.
