These cake mix cookies are so easy and fun to make! Plus, they are delicious. They are perfect for any BBQ or 4th of July celebrations. You will only need a couple of basic ingredients to make these tasty treats.
Ingredients
- White Cake Mix: Any brand of white cake mix will work.
- Butter: For this recipe, I used salted butter. I like a hint of salt with sweet treats.
- Egg: Medium egg
- Cream Cheese: Make sure it is softened so there aren’t lumps in your frosting.
- Vanilla Extract: I always try to use clear vanilla when I make the frosting. When you use dark vanilla the colors look a little off.
- Powdered Sugar: regular powdered sugar works great.
- Sprinkles: Make sure to use the sprinkles that are little balls. If you use crystal sprinkles the colors wont show up as well.

Do you need to refrigerate cookies with cream cheese frosting?
Yes, you should always refrigerate cookies or cakes with cream cheese frosting. However, this does not mean that you have to serve them cold. You can pull them out of the refrigerator and let them sit a little at room temperature before serving.
How should I store these cookies?
Make sure that you store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. When stored correctly, these cake mix cookies should stay fresh for 2-3 days.
Can I make these cookies in advance?
Of course! The best way to make these cookies in advance is to make the cookies the day before and store them in an airtight container. However, the frosting should be made right before you put them together to prevent the frosting from getting hard or stale.
Tips and Tricks
- Make sure you use nonpareils sprinkles (little balls). They won’t dissolve in the dough, and they will stay nice and bright.
- Be careful not to overbake the cookies. Because you are putting frosting in the middle, you want to make sure that the cookies are nice and soft, so they don’t fall apart.
- You can make these cookies for any holiday or celebration! Just change the sprinkles and the frosting, and you have the perfect festive treat.
