Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies are cake like cookies that are chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside and are famous for the powdered sugar crackle appearance. These red velvet cookies will look and taste just like they came from a professional bakery.

If you have ever had a traditional chocolate crinkle cookie you know that they are a fudgy chocolate cookie rolled in powdered sugar which forms a beautiful crackle like appearance. These red velvet cookies are just like the traditional chocolate crinkle cookie, but are less fudgy, and are of course red in color. They are the perfect cookie recipe for your holiday gathering.

Why Are They Called Crinkle Cookies?

Crinkle cookies get their name from their crackle appearance. Cookie dough is rolled in granulated sugar and then rolled in powdered sugar before baking. When the cookies bake and expand in the oven, the powdered sugar breaks apart giving the cookie a “crackle” appearance.

Best Food Coloring for Red Velvet Cookies

I recommend using gel food coloring when making red velvet cookies or cake because it is more concentrated and gives off a more vibrant red color. Liquid food coloring works just fine too, you will just need to add a little extra to get that deep red color.

Can I freeze Crinkle Cookies?

Freeze Cookie Dough: To freeze crinkle cookies, you will want to prepare dough as instructed below, but only roll the cookie dough into balls. Place cookie dough balls on a baking sheet and place in the freezer for up to one hour. Transfer to an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Just before baking roll cookie dough into granulated sugar and powdered sugar and bake as directed adding 2-3 minutes to the baking time.

Freeze Baked Cookies: To freeze baked cookies, allow them to cool completely. Transfer them to an airtight container making sure to lay them flat. Freeze for up to 3 months.

How To Store Crinkle Cookies

These crinkle cookies are great to make ahead of time. They stary soft and chewy on the inside even a few days after baking. Store them in an airtight container or a Ziplock bag at room temperature.

Tips For Making the Best Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies

1-Don’t chill your cookie dough longer than 30 minutes. You want your cookies to spread a little more than your average cookie so that you will get more of the crinkle appearance. Chilling the dough for 30 minutes will make the dough easier to handle and roll into balls without making a mess.

2-Roll cookie dough in granulated sugar first! Rolling cooking dough in granulated sugar before rolling them in powdered sugar will give your cookie the perfect cracking look. This is due to the top of the cookie drying out before the middle of the cookie is baked.

3-Always use parchment paper when baking cookies instead of spraying your pan with nonstick cooking spray. This will keep your cookies from spreading too much in the oven.
