Popular Substitutions & Additions

If you don’t like hoagie rolls, you can switch them out for any thick slice of bread. You could also serve them open faced and top them with au jus.

For some added spice, you can substitute pepper jack cheese for the provolone cheese.

Balsamic vinegar can be used in place of the Worcestershire sauce in this French dip sandwich recipe.

Storage & Leftovers

If you have any leftover french dip sandwiches, store them in the fridge in a sealed container. To prevent soggy bread, store the roast beef in a separate container and don’t put it on the bread until you are ready to eat it. If stored properly, the roast beef will remain fresh in the fridge for up to 3 days. It can be reheated in the microwave or the oven until warm.

French Dip Sandwiches FAQs

What is Au Jus?

Au Jus is a sauce that is made from meat drippings. For these sandwiches, use the liquid that is left in the pan as a flavorful dipping sauce.

Do I have to buy roast beef from the deli or can I buy it pre-bagged in the lunch meat section?

You can buy your roast beef fresh from the deli or pre-packaged, just make sure that it is sliced deli style so that it will soak up the liquid.

Are the onions just for flavor or can I add them to my french dip sandwich?

Both! The onions do add a good amount of flavor to the meat, but you can also add them onto your sandwich. It is totally up to you!
