Ingredients For Teriyaki Chicken Rice Bowl
- Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts: I prefer to use chicken breasts, but you can also use chicken thighs.
- Olive Oil: I like to use extra virgin olive oil for the health benefits, but you can also use vegetable oil.
- Low Sodium Soy Sauce: Low sodium soy sauce will cut down on the salt content in this recipe.
- Water: Needed for the teriyaki sauce.
- Brown Sugar: Adds a sweetness to the sauce. You can use light or dark brown sugar.
- Rice Vinegar: Is commonly used in Asian dishes.
- Sesame Oil: Adds a great flavor to the sauce, but this is also optional.
- Minced Garlic: I prefer to use fresh minced garlic over garlic powder.
- Ginger: Ground ginger works great in this teriyaki sauce. It’s easy to use and most people have it on hand.
- Honey: Adds a sweet flavor to the sauce, and also helps to thicken the sauce.
- Cornstarch: Adding cornstarch to the teriyaki sauce with thicken the sauce to coat the chicken.
- Rice for serving: Use white rice, brown rice, or quinoa.
- Vegetables for serving: Fresh steamed carrots and broccoli compliment this chicken great.
How to make teriyaki chicken
Teriyaki chicken is so easy to make. It will take you less time to prepare it, than it does to order take out and pick it up.
- Start by heating oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and add cubed chicken.
- Brown Chicken until it is cooked through and no longer pink in the middle.
- While Chicken is browning, prepare your teriyaki sauce! In a medium size mixing bowl whisk together soy sauce, water, honey, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and cornstarch.
- Once Chicken is browned and cooked through, add your homemade teriyaki sauce to your skillet and continue to cook stirring until the sauce has thickened.
- Serve immediately with white or brown rice and vegetables of your choice. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onion

How to store leftover teriyaki chicken
If you have any leftovers, store the rice and vegetables in a separate container than the teriyaki chicken. Place them both in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Storing the rice and veggies in a separate container will ensure that the rice doesn’t get soggy from the teriyaki sauce.
Tips for making teriyaki chicken rice bowls
- The sesame oil is optional in this recipe. I’ve made it without and it taste just as delicious.
- Cut chicken into evenly bite size pieces to ensure even cooking. This will allow all the chicken to cook evenly without having overcooked pieces of chicken.
- Be careful not to over cook the chicken. You don’t want it to dry out and become tough.

I served it with blackened broccoli.
I’m so glad you liked it. Blackened broccoli sounds delicious!
Lived on the Dole pineapple plantation in Hawaii many years. Teriyaki was a staple. I added a little hoisin sauce and added a little extra sesame oil along with a splash of hot sauce for just a little spice. I also sliced up some water chestnuts and added at the end for a little extra crunchy texture.
Ono to da max
The pineapple plantation is one of my favorite places to visit when in Hawaii. I love all the additions you made to the recipe, thank you for sharing.
Everyone enjoyed it. It was easy. However, I would most definitely decrease soy sauce to 1/3c and sub water for remaining fluid oz. The soy sauce was a bit to over powering.
I am glad you liked it. Let me know what you think with your substitution.
My daughter and I made this and it’s delicious! Easy and fast to prepare.

FINALLY a meal my whole family loves! The sauce is amazing! Highly recommend.

Tasted great. Fed a large of family of 7. I think I will use a little less corn starch next time. Very thick sauce, I like it a little thinner.
So happy to hear your family loved it. Thank you for sharing!
Can this be made without the ginger ? I have everything else on hand
Yes, you can leave out the ginger.
Can this be made without the ginger ?
Yes, it can be made without ginger. It will change the flavor slightly. But it still tastes amazing.
I made this sauce and it is not it. It doesn’t taste like teriyaki and a bit thick. I wouldn’t recommend this recipe at all. This sauce doesn’t taste good at all. I’m only eating it so that I won’t waste my food. Will not make it again.
I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t like it! This is one of our most popular recipes, did you follow the recipe exactly?
