Easy German Pancake Recipe

This is seriously the best German pancake recipe I have ever had. It is a classic breakfast in our home on the weekends. It has less butter than other recipes, it’s so easy to prepare and takes only 20 minutes to bake into a nice puffy golden brown pancake. Dutch baby pancakes are made with simple pantry ingredients and will be a hit with your family and friends. What are German pancakes

German pancakes, also called Dutch baby pancakes, are made from flour, milk, eggs, and vanilla. They are baked in the oven or in a cast iron skillet on the stove, puff up when baked, and then fall as they cool. They are often topped with powdered sugar, fresh squeezed lemon juice, syrup, or fruit.

Ingredients for German Pancakes

  • Butter: I like to use unsalted butter, but if you prefer to use salted butter omit the 1/8 tsp. salt for this recipe.
  • Eggs: This recipe calls for 6 medium-large eggs.
  • Flour: All purpose flour is a great option, but feel free to use the flour of your choice.
  • Milk: I use 1% milk to cut down on the fat.
  • Salt: Add more or less to taste.
  • Vanilla: Pure vanilla or vanilla extract both work well in this recipe.

How to make easy German pancakes

  • Preheat oven to 425F and add 2 Tbsp. of unsalted butter to a 9×13 baking dish. Place it in the preheating oven to allow the butter to melt.
  • While butter is melting in the preheating oven, add eggs, flour, milk, salt, and vanilla to a blender or food processor. Cover and blend until smooth.
  • Once butter has melted and oven has been brought to temperature, pour batter into baking dish, over butter.
  • Place in the oven and bake until edges are golden brown and puffy, about 20-22 minutes.
  • Remove from oven, sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve warm with syrup or fruit. Enjoy!

Optional toppings

  • Syrup: Maple or berry syrup
  • Jam: Strawberry or raspberry are my favorite.
  • Powdered Sugar: Sprinkled on top.
  • Fresh Berries: Strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are my favorite.
  • Cinnamon and Sugar: Tastes just like a churro.
  • Lemon Juice: A squeeze of a fresh lemon pair well with fresh berries.
